Conditional Sentences

Kalimat pengandaian atau dalam bahasa Inggris disebut conditional sentences.

Dalam bahasa Inggris, conditional sentences pada umumnya memiliki ciri-ciri sebagai berikut:

a. digunakannya kata if dalam anak kalimat (subordinate clause). Karena clause ini diawali oleh if maka disebut if clause.

b. digunakannya modal auxiliary, seperti will, can, may, must, would, could, might, 

Terdapat 3 tipe conditional Sentence, yaitu :

1.                 Real Condition :

 Bila pengandaian (if clause) mengandung kemungkinan terjadi (probability).

Pola kalimat :

If caluse : Simple present tense (verb1, verb s/es , is , am ,are)

Main Clause : Simple modal future tense(shall/will + verb 1)

Rumus :

If clause	Main clause
If + S + verb1/verb s/es/is/am/are + object	S + will/shall + verb1 + object

Contoh :

If I have a lot of money , I will go around the world

          (if clause)                              (main clause)

2.               Unreal Condition

Conditional if bertipe kedua di sebut unreal condition karena bertentangan dengan kenyataan yang terjadi .

Pola kalimat :

If clause : Simple past tense (verb 2 , were)

Main Clause : Simple modal lampau tense (should/would + verb1)

Rumus :

If clause	Main Clause
If + S + Verb2/verb d/ed/were(tidak boleh ada was) + object	S + would/should + verb1 + object

Contoh :

If I had a big party , I would invite all my friends

                             (If clause)                      (main clause)

Faktanya : I don’t have a party , I would invite all my friends

Untuk Unreal Condition faktanya selalu bertentangan. Dan untuk subject he/she/it memakai were bukan was.

3.                Imaginary past/unreal past condition

Conditional IF yang ketiga disebut unreal condition karena bertentangan dengan kenyataan lampau yang terjadi .

Pola kalimat :

If clause               : Past perfect (had + Verb 3)

Main Clause        : Modal Future perfect (should/would + have + verb 3)

Rumus :

If clause	Main Clause
If + S + had + verb 3 + Object	S + would/should + have + verb 1 + object

Contoh :

If my mother had gone to Bali , she would not have met you oin Yogyakarta.

Faktanya : Mother did’n go to Bali so she met you in Yogyakarta.
